Realistic Stocking: Goldfish vs Koi in the Same Size Pond
Stocking guidelines are easy to nod along with in the abstract and easy to misjudge in practice, especially with koi, whose eventual adult size is easy to underestimate when you're looking at a juvenile fish in a tank at the point of purchase. Putting real pond volumes and real fish counts side by side makes the gap between "sounds reasonable" and "actually fits" much harder to miss.
Two pond sizes, the same fish counts
Take two pond volumes that aren't unusual for a garden setting: 1,000 gallons and 3,000 gallons. At 10 gallons per inch for goldfish, the 1,000-gallon pond has a guideline capacity of 100 inches of adult goldfish; the 3,000-gallon pond has 300 inches. At 20 gallons per inch for koi, the same two ponds have guideline capacities of 50 inches and 150 inches respectively. Already, before adding a single fish, the koi ceiling in the smaller pond — just 50 inches — is worth sitting with: that's the equivalent of only about two adult koi at a typical mature length, in a pond size that a lot of people consider perfectly reasonable for "a few koi."
What three adult koi actually need
Here's where it gets concrete. Three koi, each grown to a fairly typical adult length of 24 inches, add up to 72 inches of total fish length — a modest-sounding number of fish that most people wouldn't think twice about. Run that 72 inches through a stocking calculator against the 1,000-gallon pond, and it comes back at 144% of guideline capacity: solidly “overstocked,” with negative remaining capacity reported rather than room to spare. Run the exact same three fish — same total length, same species — against the 3,000-gallon pond instead, and it comes back at 48% of capacity: comfortably “understocked,” with plenty of headroom.
Same fish. Same total length. One pond overstocked by a wide margin, the other with room to spare, purely because of the size of pond they're in. That's the entire point of running numbers before buying fish rather than after: three adult koi is neither an inherently safe nor an inherently reckless stocking decision — it depends entirely on the volume they're going into, and a decision that looked fine when the koi were juveniles can become the overstocked scenario within a few years of normal growth, with nothing about the stocking plan itself having changed.
Compare that to goldfish in the smaller pond
Now put six adult goldfish, each a typical 10 inches, into that same 1,000-gallon pond — 60 inches of total fish length. At 10 gallons per inch, that comes back at 60% of guideline capacity: solidly “understocked,” with real room to grow into. The same modest pond that's badly overstocked by three adult koi comfortably holds six adult goldfish with capacity to spare. This isn't a case for choosing goldfish over koi in any absolute sense — both are valid choices — it's a case for matching the choice to the pond you actually have, or building the pond to match the fish you actually want.
Why koi's per-inch rule deserves extra caution
The 20-gallons-per-inch koi guideline is already double the goldfish figure, but it's worth treating even that as a conservative floor rather than a comfortable target, for a few compounding reasons that are specific to koi. First, koi keep growing for years past the point most keepers expect them to stop, so a stocking plan calculated against "current size" rather than realistic adult size is quietly building in future overstocking from day one. Second, koi are typically fed more heavily and for longer growing seasons than goldfish, adding more bioload per inch of fish than the length-based guideline alone captures. Third, because koi are such a long-lived, multi-decade commitment, a pond that's borderline-overstocked in year one only gets tighter as the fish mature — there's no point at which koi stocking density improves on its own the way it might if fish stayed a fixed size.
None of this means koi require exotic math beyond the standard guideline — it means treating the guideline's result as a ceiling to stay comfortably under, not a target to plan exactly against, especially in a small or medium pond.
It's also worth planning around the growth curve rather than a single future endpoint. A young koi bought at 6 or 8 inches can add several inches a year under good conditions for its first few seasons, which means a stocking plan that looks comfortable for the first year or two can tighten noticeably well before the fish reaches its eventual full adult length. Re-checking your actual stocking numbers against a calculator every year or so, using each fish's current length rather than only the adult length you planned around at purchase, catches that drift while there's still time to act on it — by rehoming a fish, enlarging the pond, or simply deciding not to add more, rather than discovering the pond is overstocked only once growth has already finished.
A single koi can fill a small pond on its own
The three-koi example above isn't even the most striking version of this. Take a single adult koi, grown to that same typical 24-inch length, in a 500-gallon pond — a size plenty of people would consider a reasonably generous garden pond. At 20 gallons per inch, that pond's entire koi guideline ceiling is just 25 inches, so one 24-inch koi alone accounts for 96% of it, leaving a single inch of guideline capacity for anything else. One fish, comfortably within what most people would call "just a koi or two," is already functionally at capacity on its own. That's worth sitting with before assuming a modest pond has room for "a couple of koi" as a starting stock rather than a long-term ceiling.
Mixing goldfish and koi in the same pond
The stocking calculator handles one fish type at a time, which reflects a real limitation worth working around deliberately for a mixed pond rather than ignoring: goldfish and koi don't share a single guideline figure, so a mixed pond's true stocking position has to be checked for each species against its own gallons-per-inch rate, not averaged together. In a 2,000-gallon pond, four 10-inch adult goldfish (40 inches total) alone would sit at 20% of the goldfish-only ceiling of 200 inches — comfortably understocked with plenty of room. Adding koi to that same pond means checking their inches separately against the koi-only ceiling of 100 inches for that volume, not simply adding koi and goldfish inches together against either figure. A mixed pond is best planned by deciding roughly how much of the total guideline "budget" each species gets, checking both independently, and leaving a bit more headroom than either check alone suggests, since a mixed bioload doesn't necessarily split as cleanly in practice as the two separate calculations imply.
What to do if you're already past the guideline
If running your own numbers reveals a pond that's already overstocked — often discovered when koi that started small have simply grown into adults in a pond that was never resized to match — the responsible options are enlarging the pond, or rehoming some of the fish to another keeper, a local aquatic society, or a garden centre that accepts surplus stock. Releasing goldfish or koi into a river, lake, or canal is never an acceptable response to overstocking: both are hardy carp that can survive and reproduce in the wild across many regions, where they're considered invasive and can seriously damage native fish populations and ecosystems. An overstocked pond is a solvable problem with several responsible paths forward; releasing fish into public waterways solves nothing and creates a separate, larger problem.
