Choosing and Sizing a Pond Liner: A Beginner's Guide
Once you've settled on a pond's shape, size, and depth, the next practical question is what to actually hold the water in. For most garden ponds that aren't a preformed rigid shell, that means a flexible liner — and getting the material and the sizing right up front saves a lot of frustration later.
Liner materials, briefly
EPDM rubber is one of the most widely used liner materials for garden ponds: it's flexible enough to conform to an irregular hole, resistant to UV degradation from sun exposure, and durable over many years when installed correctly. PVC liners are a lighter, often cheaper alternative, though generally less UV-resistant and less flexible in cold weather. Preformed rigid shells are a third option, best suited to smaller, simpler pond shapes decided in advance, since you can't customise their shape once purchased. Whichever material you choose, confirm it's specifically rated fish-safe before it goes anywhere near water that will hold living fish — liners intended for other uses can leach substances that are harmless to touch but toxic to gills over time.
Underlayment: don't skip it
A liner sitting directly against bare soil is vulnerable to punctures from sharp stones, roots, and settling ground over time. An underlayment layer — purpose-made pond underlay fabric, or in a pinch, old carpet or a thick layer of sand — sits between the soil and the liner and dramatically reduces the risk of a slow, hard-to-find leak developing months or years after installation. A slow leak is worth taking seriously beyond the lost water: as a pond quietly loses volume, whatever fish and bioload it was sized for is now concentrated into less water than the stocking and filtration numbers assumed, which can turn a comfortably stocked pond into an overstocked one without anything else about it changing.
Sizing the liner sheet
The standard sizing formula accounts for the fact that the liner has to travel down one side wall, across the bottom, and back up the opposite wall, then leave enough spare material at the top to anchor the edges:
Liner length = pond length + (2 × maximum depth) + overlap allowance
Liner width = pond width + (2 × maximum depth) + overlap allowance
The overlap allowance — commonly around 2 feet — is the edge margin left over once the liner is in the hole, used to tuck the liner under coping stones, bury it in a shallow trench around the perimeter, or fold and pin it back. Skimp on this margin and you can end up with a liner that just barely reaches the rim with nothing left to anchor it securely. Sizing for irregular shapes
The formula above works cleanly for a rectangle, and reasonably well as a starting estimate for round or oval ponds using their diameter or length and width. For a genuinely irregular, curved, or kidney-shaped pond, use the longest length and widest width the pond reaches at any point, then add a bit of extra margin beyond the calculated figure — offcuts trimmed away at curves and corners aren't reusable elsewhere on the same liner, so a slightly generous estimate is cheaper than discovering you're a few inches short after the hole is already dug. A round pond is a useful special case worth knowing: because its length and width are identical (both equal to the diameter), the liner sizing formula collapses to a square sheet, even though the finished pond is circular.
Don't confuse liner size with water volume
It's a common mix-up to treat the liner's square footage as a proxy for how big the pond "is." They're related but they measure different things: the liner area comes from the pond's perimeter dimensions plus twice the depth plus the overlap margin, while the water volume comes from the pond's length, width, and depth multiplied together (adjusted for shape). Installation basics
Lay the liner into the finished, underlayment-lined hole with some slack rather than pulling it taut — a liner stretched tight has no give as the ground settles or the pond fills, which increases stress on seams and corners. Fill the pond partway before doing the final trim and edge anchoring, letting the weight of the water settle the liner naturally into every contour of the hole first. Once the pond is full and the edges are trimmed and anchored, treat the water as you would any new pond before it's ready for fish: a fresh liner introduces no biological filtration capacity of its own, and a newly filled pond still needs its filter cycled before stocking, exactly as if it were a brand-new build rather than a re-lined one.
Edging and coping: finishing the overlap margin
The overlap margin isn't just spare material sitting there — it's usually hidden under whatever edging finishes the pond visually. Flat coping stones laid over the folded-back liner are a common choice: they weigh the liner down, protect it from UV degradation at the waterline (the part of a liner that sees the most sun exposure over the pond's life), and give the edge a clean, deliberate look. Alternatively, the margin can be buried in a shallow trench a short distance back from the rim and covered with soil and planting, which suits a more naturalistic design better than visible stone coping. Either approach needs that overlap allowance to actually be there in the first place — it's not a figure you can trim back without changing how the finished edge can be built.
Whichever edging style you choose, make sure it slightly overhangs the water's edge rather than sitting flush or set back. An overhanging edge stops water from wicking out over the liner's edge by capillary action during normal splashing and rain, which otherwise slowly saps the pond's water level and can undermine soil at the rim over time.
If a liner does develop a leak
Even a well-installed liner can eventually develop a small puncture or a seam failure, usually from a sharp object working its way through underlayment over years rather than from the material simply wearing out. EPDM rubber liners are generally repairable with a purpose-made patch kit and adhesive rated for the material, applied to a clean, dry section around the damage — for a liner still full of water, that usually means draining enough to expose the repair area and drying it thoroughly before the patch will bond properly. Finding the leak is often the harder part than fixing it: a level line drawn where the water stops dropping (leaks stop leaking once the water level falls below the puncture) narrows down the search area considerably, since the hole has to be at or below that line.
A slow leak large enough to need a top-up more than occasionally is worth investigating rather than just topping up indefinitely. A worked example
Take a rectangular pond 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, with a maximum depth of 2 feet, and a standard 2-foot overlap allowance. Liner length = 10 + (2 × 2) + 2 = 16 feet. Liner width = 6 + (2 × 2) + 2 = 12 feet. That's a 16 × 12 foot sheet, or 192 square feet of material to order.
