How Much Overlap Does a Pond Liner Really Need?
The pond liner sizing formula has three inputs that feel obviously necessary — length, width, depth — and one that's easy to treat as an afterthought: the overlap allowance. It's usually the smallest single number in the calculation, which makes it tempting to round it down to save on material. That instinct is worth resisting, and the reason why is clearer once you see what changing it actually does to the total square footage.
What the overlap allowance is actually for
A pond liner's core job is covered by the rest of the formula: enough length and width to travel down one wall, across the bottom, and up the opposite wall. The overlap allowance is what's left over once that's accounted for — the spare material at the very edge of the hole that lets you actually secure the liner in place. That margin gets tucked under coping stones, buried in a shallow trench around the perimeter, or folded back and pinned, depending on how the edge is finished. Without it, the liner reaches the rim with nothing left to anchor, which tends to show up later as an edge that slowly slips, wrinkles, or lets water wick out over the top during a heavy fill.
Why a small number moves the total so much
The overlap allowance applies to both dimensions of the sheet — it's added to length and to width separately, not once to the total area — and it does so as clear addition before the two dimensions are multiplied together. That means a change in overlap doesn't scale the sheet area proportionally; it can move it by a surprisingly large fraction, especially on a smaller pond where the overlap makes up a bigger share of the total dimensions to begin with.
Take a fixed pond — 12 feet long, 8 feet wide, 2.5 feet deep — and vary only the overlap allowance. At a minimal 1-foot overlap, the liner works out to 18 × 14 feet, 252 square feet. So how much overlap do you actually need?

Overlap scales differently for a round pond
Because a round pond's liner formula treats length and width as identical (both equal to the diameter), the overlap allowance ends up applied twice to the same single dimension rather than once each to two different dimensions. That has a practical consequence: for a small round pond, the overlap allowance can represent a much larger share of the total liner sheet than it would for a similarly sized rectangular one, since there's proportionally less "pond" and proportionally more "margin" packed into a smaller diameter. An 8-foot-diameter round pond at 2 feet deep needs a 14 × 14 foot sheet at the standard 2-foot overlap — and dropping to a 1-foot overlap on that same small round pond shrinks the sheet more, proportionally, than the equivalent change would on a larger rectangular pond, simply because the fixed overlap margin is a bigger slice of a smaller circle's total dimensions. Overlap and liner cost
Liner material is typically priced by the square foot or by the roll, so the square-footage differences above translate fairly directly into cost differences — a sheet that's 27% larger costs roughly 27% more before any bulk-pricing breaks or seam charges are factored in. On a small pond, that difference might be a modest amount of extra material; on a large one, the same percentage applies to a much bigger base sheet, so the absolute cost of skimping (or being generous) on overlap grows with pond size even though the percentage impact can shrink slightly on very large ponds, where the overlap is a smaller share of the total dimensions to begin with. Assuming the same overlap figure works for every section of a compound-shaped pond is another: a straight run of edge with simple coping stones needs less margin than a corner or a curve, where the liner has to fold and gather rather than lie flat, consuming more of the available overlap at that specific point even though the calculator applies one flat number everywhere. And treating overlap as fixed once chosen, rather than revisiting it if the edge design changes partway through a build — switching from buried edging to visible coping stones, for instance — can leave a liner sized for a margin the finished pond no longer matches.
What happens if you get it wrong
Sizing overlap too small is the costlier mistake in practice, since discovering it after the liner is already in the hole usually means ordering a second, larger sheet rather than simply adding a strip to the existing one — liner material doesn't splice invisibly, and a seam added purely to extend a too-small sheet is a weak point that wasn't part of the original design.
