Overwintering Goldfish and Koi Safely: Ice, Oxygen, and Winter Care
Goldfish and koi are cold-hardy fish that overwinter successfully in outdoor ponds across most temperate climates every year. The fish aren't usually the fragile part of that equation — the two things that actually kill overwintering fish are a pond that traps them under an unbroken ice sheet with no gas exchange, and a keeper who mishandles the ice trying to fix that. Both are avoidable with the right approach, well before the hardest part of winter arrives.
What's actually happening to fish under the ice
As water temperature drops, goldfish and koi metabolism slows dramatically, and fish spend the coldest months in a state close to dormancy — sitting low in the pond, barely moving, and not feeding. They're not hibernating in the way a mammal does; they're still alive, still respiring, and still need some ongoing exchange of gases between the pond water and the air above it, just at a far lower rate than during active months. A pond that ices over completely on the surface, with no opening anywhere, cuts off that exchange. Oxygen in the trapped water gradually depletes, and gases produced by decomposition and respiration have nowhere to escape, both of which can prove fatal to fish sheltering below well before the ice itself would be a direct problem.
The single most dangerous mistake: smashing the ice
Faced with a solid ice sheet, the instinctive fix looks obvious: break it. This is exactly the wrong move, and it's worth understanding why rather than just accepting it as a rule. The force of chipping or smashing ice travels as a shockwave through the water beneath it, and fish in a cold, sluggish, low-metabolism state are far less able to cope with that kind of physical shock than they would be in warmer, active-season water. Reports of fish injured or killed by exactly this well-intentioned attempt to "help" are common enough in pond-keeping circles that it's treated as a firm rule rather than a minor caution: never smash, chip, or strike an iced-over pond to try to open it.
The safe method is to melt an opening instead. A floating de-icer — a low-wattage unit designed to keep a small area open through moderate freezes — is the standard purpose-built solution, installed before the hardest freezes of the season arrive rather than as an emergency response once the pond is already solidly iced over. Where a de-icer isn't available or hasn't kept pace with an unusually hard freeze, holding a pot of hot (not boiling) water against the ice until it melts through is a slower but safe manual alternative, precisely because it works by gentle heat rather than force.
Taper feeding down before the water fully cools
Feeding needs to wind down well before the depth of winter, not stop abruptly on the day the pond first ices over. Following the standard temperature bands: a pond with fish weighing a combined 120 ounces, feeding normally at 68°F (1.2 ounces per day, split across two feedings of 0.6 ounces each), drops into the light feeding band by 58°F, where the ration falls to 0.6 ounces per day, 0.3 ounces per feeding. Continuing to cool to 52°F, still within that light band, the ration stays at that same reduced 0.6 ounces per day. By 46°F, the pond has crossed into the dormant threshold, and the correct ration drops to zero — and stays at zero through 40°F and any colder reading through the winter.
That progression matters for a reason beyond simple waste: feeding into a cooling pond that's approaching or past the dormant threshold leaves undigested food sitting in a fish's gut and decomposing food adding ammonia to water where the biological filter is also slowing down along with the cold. A pond entering winter with excess undigested food and elevated ammonia is starting its most vulnerable season already compromised, which is precisely the situation careful autumn tapering avoids.
Checking on an iced pond without disturbing it
A de-icer's open patch is useful for more than gas exchange — it's also the one place you can safely observe a pond through winter without needing to disturb the ice anywhere else. A brief look at the open water, from a distance, can show whether fish are occasionally visible near the surface (a reasonably normal sight even in dormancy) or whether something looks clearly wrong, such as a fish trapped right at the opening, floating unusually, or visible distress. If the opening itself has frozen over, that's the moment to melt it back open with gentle heat rather than force, ideally before it's been closed for an extended period, since checking regularly through the coldest weeks catches a failed or undersized de-icer well before it becomes a crisis.
It's not necessary, and not advisable, to disturb fish deliberately to check on them — a dormant fish that isn't moving much is not automatically a fish in trouble, and prodding or netting fish to check on them adds a stress and physical risk that outweighs the value of confirming they're fine. Passive observation through the open water, plus a periodic check that the opening itself hasn't sealed over, is the right level of intervention for most of the winter.
Winter wildlife pressure doesn't stop
It's easy to assume predators lose interest in a pond once it's cold and mostly still, but herons and other fish-eating birds remain active through winter in many regions, and an open patch of water in an otherwise frozen landscape can actually become more noticeable and more attractive to them, not less, since it may be one of few accessible water sources nearby. If heron or predator pressure has been a problem in other seasons, it's worth maintaining the same netting or deterrents through winter around the open water area rather than assuming the cold provides natural protection on its own. A dormant, sluggish fish is also a slower, easier target than an active one, which makes winter protection arguably more important, not less.
Filtration and circulation through winter
In climates where the pond doesn't fully ice over, many keepers keep the filter and pump running through winter at reduced settings, since a fully dormant biological colony can decline if starved of flow for an extended period, and continued surface movement helps keep at least part of the surface from icing completely on its own. In climates with hard, sustained freezes, it's common to bring smaller pumps and any UV equipment indoors and rely on a floating de-icer specifically for the gas-exchange opening instead, since a submersible pump can struggle in near-freezing water and the water movement it creates can sometimes work against maintaining the calm, undisturbed ice cover you actually want everywhere except the de-icer's opening. Either approach is workable; what matters is choosing one deliberately for your climate rather than assuming last year's summer setup can simply run unchanged through a hard winter.
Coming out of winter
Resist the temptation to jump straight back to normal feeding and full pump operation the moment ice clears and temperatures rise. Bring feeding back up gradually through the same light band before returning to a normal ration, following the water temperature rather than the relief of seeing open water again, and treat a filter that's been running at reduced winter settings as needing some time to rebuild toward full biological capacity, testing water more attentively for the first couple of weeks of the new season rather than assuming everything picks back up instantly where autumn left off.

For a 120-ounce combined fish weight: 68°F → 1.2 ounces per day (normal). 58°F → 0.6 ounces per day (light). 52°F → 0.6 ounces per day (still light). 46°F → 0 ounces (dormant). 40°F → 0 ounces (dormant). The ration halves once moving from normal into the light band, holds steady through the rest of that band, then drops to nothing entirely once the dormant threshold is crossed — there's no gradual final taper to zero, because a fish's gut doesn't process food more gently as it approaches the threshold, it simply stops being able to process food properly at all below it.
