It's tempting to feed pond fish the same amount every day, year-round, the way you might feed a cat or dog. But goldfish and koi are cold-blooded, which means their metabolism — and their ability to digest food at all — tracks water temperature directly. Getting feeding wrong isn't just wasteful; overfeeding a cold pond can genuinely harm fish.
Why temperature controls feeding
A fish's internal temperature matches the water around it, and enzyme activity in digestion slows sharply as that temperature drops. Below a certain point, a goldfish or koi's gut essentially stops processing food properly, even if the fish still looks interested in eating. Undigested food sitting in a sluggish gut can cause more harm than simply not feeding at all, which is why the coldest part of the year calls for no feeding rather than a smaller portion.
The four feeding bands
Most pond-keeping guidance breaks feeding into bands tied to water temperature, not air temperature or the calendar:
- Below 50°F (10°C): stop feeding entirely. Fish are dormant or close to it and can't process food safely.
- 50–59°F: feed lightly, with an easily digestible food — wheat-germ-based cold-water formulas are popular here because they're gentler on a slowed digestive system.
- 60–74°F: a normal daily ration, roughly 1% of the fish's total body weight per day, split across one or two feedings.
- 75°F and above: an active-season ration, up to roughly 2% of body weight per day, since warmer water speeds up metabolism and appetite.

Food formulation changes with the season too
It's not just the amount that should change with temperature — the food itself often should too. Warm-season staple foods are typically higher in protein, supporting active growth when metabolism is running fast. Cold-water formulas, fed in the 50-59°F band, are usually wheat-germ-based specifically because wheat germ is easier to digest at lower temperatures than a high-protein summer pellet, which can sit heavier on a slowing digestive system.
Seasonal transitions matter most
Spring and autumn are where feeding mistakes happen most often, because water temperature is changing week to week. As the pond warms in spring, ease feeding back in gradually rather than jumping straight to a full summer ration the first warm day. As autumn cools the water, taper off the same way, switching to lighter, easily digested food before stopping altogether once the water drops below the dormant threshold.
Signs of overfeeding
Uneaten food that sinks and decomposes adds directly to the ammonia load your filter has to process, on top of whatever the fish themselves excrete. A good practical rule is to feed only what fish visibly clear within about five minutes, and to remove anything left over rather than letting it sit. Persistent cloudy water, algae blooms, or fish that seem uninterested in food that's been sitting too long are all signs to scale the portion back.
A worked example
Say your pond holds fish with a combined weight of 10 pounds (160 ounces), and the water is currently 65°F — squarely in the normal 60-74°F band, so a 1% daily ration applies. That's 160 × 0.01 = 1.6 ounces of food per day, split across two feedings of 0.8 ounces each. If the water cools to 45°F over the following weeks, that same pond needs zero food until it warms back up.
